For 2016, it you want to sample the primal burble of an eight-cylinder mill from the quad exhaust of a <strong>Porsche Cayenne<\/strong>, you&#8217;re going to have to ante up to the Turbo model, as every other member of the Porsche people-mover family moved to six-cylinder power the previous year.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/luxurycarmagazine.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/P1170564.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3081\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3081\" src=\"http:\/\/luxurycarmagazine.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/P1170564.jpg\" alt=\"P1170564\" width=\"4112\" height=\"3088\" srcset=\"http:\/\/luxurycarmagazine.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/P1170564.jpg 4112w, http:\/\/luxurycarmagazine.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/P1170564-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/luxurycarmagazine.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/P1170564-768x577.jpg 768w, http:\/\/luxurycarmagazine.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/P1170564-1024x769.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 4112px) 100vw, 4112px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Yes that&#8217;s right &#8211; even the vaunted Cayenne GTS, once the purveyor of a 4.8-liter V8 soundtrack has switched over to the same turbocharged V6 offered by the smaller Macan Turbo, making almost every Porsche SUV a member of the forced-induction club. Still, if a German heavy metal soundtrack was all you were after then you could simply grab a Scorpions record out of the bargain bin at your local HMV. Mellifluous tailpipe symphony aside, there are plenty of other reasons to step up to the 2016 Porsche Cayenne Turbo.<\/p>\n<p>The first, of course, being power. The Cayenne Turbo offers up 520 horses and 553 lb-ft of twist waiting to be unleashed through a standard all-wheel drive system. Hold down the brake pedal and the accelerator at the same time and you&#8217;ll activate the &#8216;Performance Start&#8217; mode, which dumps all that torque to the pavement after discretely loading up the eight-speed automatic transmission&#8217;s torque converter. The end result is four seconds or so to 100 km\/h, which is quick enough to humble not just every other SUV on the market (save its Turbo S sibling) but also a goodly number of sport sedans as well.<\/p>\n<p>In the real world, however, Performance Start is likely to more of a novelty than a daily occurrence. It&#8217;s a good thing then that the Cayenne Turbo&#8217;s powerband is sufficiently broad as to be devastating in almost every driving situation, with a throttle tip-in of an inch or two enough to surge forward at a rate of speed that will quickly attract the attention of local law enforcement. In fact, this is somewhat of an issue with the Porsche SUV &#8211; staying within the lines of societal expectations isn&#8217;t easy given how responsive its go-pedal is, and how sonorous its Sport Exhaust feature makes even the most minor transgression. I found myself babying the Cayenne Turbo around town for a couple of days until I got more used to the sensitivity of its drivetrain.<\/p>\n<p>Like all top-tier Porsche products, the Cayenne Turbo offers a range of available suspension settings, transmission tunings, and in the case of this SUV, ride heights. The vehicle&#8217;s button-covered center console features a toggle that inflates and deflates the Cayenne Turbo&#8217;s air suspension to your taste, stiffens or softens its cornering capability and bump absorption, and quickens the rate at which it turns gears. Most of these features are grouped together under the Sport and Sport+ driving modes, which can be easily accessed with a single touch.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/luxurycarmagazine.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/IMG_20160202_160325.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3083\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3083\" src=\"http:\/\/luxurycarmagazine.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/IMG_20160202_160325.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_20160202_160325\" width=\"4000\" height=\"2992\" srcset=\"http:\/\/luxurycarmagazine.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/IMG_20160202_160325.jpg 4000w, http:\/\/luxurycarmagazine.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/IMG_20160202_160325-300x224.jpg 300w, http:\/\/luxurycarmagazine.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/IMG_20160202_160325-768x574.jpg 768w, http:\/\/luxurycarmagazine.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/IMG_20160202_160325-1024x766.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 4000px) 100vw, 4000px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>While Sport+ gives you the full glory of rev-matched downshifts and the tautest possible dampers, it&#8217;s important to remember that the 2016 Porsche Cayenne Turbo is still a very large vehicle, and as such it&#8217;s not exactly the most precise tool for carving corners. You feel its curb weight every inch of the way, but that&#8217;s really beside the point. The Cayenne Turbo is what you use to tow your race car to the track, not what you line up on the grid, and in that role the plush SUV excels.<\/p>\n<p>Keep things in Comfort mode and learn your way around the touchy accelerator and the Porsche becomes a pleasant commuter companion. There&#8217;s ample room inside the vehicle for up to five passengers, and if you fold down the rear row of accommodations you can fit a surprising amount of gear inside its cargo area. Most surfaces are wrapped in soft touch leather, and the standard equipment list is loaded for bear, including all of the expected luxuries as well as a full suite of safety equipment.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, with a starting MSRP of $129,500 you&#8217;d expect full kit right off the bat, and while the Cayenne Turbo is certainly comprehensive when it comes to features there is always room for improvement. Customization in the form of seat choices, seat belt colours, leather, wood, and Alcantara trim options, a variety of audio and navigation systems, active safety features, and the performance-oriented Sport Chrono package can all be added to the Cayenne Turbo&#8217;s bottom line, inflating its price perilously close to that of the Turbo S&#8217; $178,100 window sticker. Still, Porsche has kept its flagship SUV competitive with rivals like the Land Rover Range Rover Sport SVR and the BMW X5 M.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, &#8216;competitive&#8217; isn&#8217;t exactly the word to use when examining the Porsche Cayenne line-up, whether discussing the entry-level model of the range-topping Turbo S. I&#8217;d be more tempted to employ the term &#8216;saviour,&#8217; as sales of this ultra-practical Porsche have been the financial lifeline necessary to keep developing cutting-edge sports cars that happen to look particularly good sitting on a trailer behind the SUV. If you&#8217;re seeking a Porsche that fits into every aspect of your daily life, it&#8217;s hard to do better than the Cayenne. If you need a do-everything P-car that can also travel alongside you at the speed of light, then it&#8217;s impossible to surpass the Cayenne Turbo.<\/p>\n<div id=\"new-royalslider-1\"
