2016 Montreal Auto Show: 2016 Porsche Macan GTS could be a performance bargain

First seen at the LA Auto Show late last year, it’s now Canada’s turn to get its first look at the 2016 Porsche Macan GTS, making its Canadian debut this week at the Montreal Auto Show.

Positioned between the S and Turbo trims, the GTS could very well be the sweet spot for potential buyers that found the S a little too wheezy (although, wit 340 horsepower and 339 lb.-ft. of torque, I do wonder how that’s possible) and the Turbo a little too rambunctious (with 400 hp and 406 lb.-ft., it’s a little easier to understand why some may be put off). Let’s not forget that the letters “GTS” often signify a perfect balance in the models on which the badge resides. We’re guessing, then, that the Macan GTS will be another page I the success story that the Macan has enjoyed so far.

On the styling front, a few elements do their part to distinguish the GTS from other models: special wheels, new rear diffuser with four-outlet exhaust and a special grille all add a layer of menace to the Macan GTS.

Inside, the additions are a little less in-yer-face, consisting of some Alcantara suede inserts, and some “GTS” embroidery throughout the cabin.

As nice as the exterior is, those that are thinking of going the GTS route are likely going to be wondering what’s changes under the hood. They likely won’t be disappointed; power from the 3.0-litre V6 is up to 360 horsepower and 369 lb.-ft. of torque. It’s all made available to all four wheels via a seven-speed PDK dual-clutch automatic transmission. It all makes for a claimed class-leading 0-100 km/h time of just 5.2 seconds, on to a n electronically-limited top speed of 256 km/h.

The best news, however, could be the price. If buyers are happy with base features, they’ll be paying no more than $73,100; indeed, the Macan GTS being a Porsche and Porsche being, well, Porsche, the options will take you well into the $90K realm if you’re not careful.

With all that power at base, though, I imagine the Macan GTS coming out as one of the better deals in the performance segment, crossover or no.
