2016 Tesla Model X revealed…sort of

Tesla has reserved a special model for its most elite clients, namely those who have already parted with the $40,000 required to get their hands on one of the first 2016 Tesla Model X models, which will come with a Signature Series trim level. They’ve also revealed images of the production model, after months of showcasing the concept on the auto show circuit.

Indeed, Tesla has tested the patients of its prospective Model X clients. Since the Californian manufacturer first spoke of the introduction of an SUV in 2012, they haven’t shown a concept where even a bumper was claimed to be production-ready. With the halting of Model S production in the Freemont factory this week, it seems we’re finally nearing production of the Model X.

Not only does the production model have a rear fascia that looks almost identical to the concept, we’re also getting our first look at cabin configuration. As promised by the concept, second- and third-row access will be via upward-swinging gullwing doors. Thanks to a smart cabin layout, numerous seating arrangements will be possible.

Mechanically, the Model X follows the same recipe as the Model S. For Signature models, buyers will be able to set their Model X to “Ludicrous” mode, which provides 762 horsepower. That means the Model X will be the most powerful SUV offered by any manufacturer. Even though it’s heavier than the Model S, Tesla is claiming a 386-kilometer range for the Model X. The 0-100 km/h sprint will come in 3.2 seconds, on to a top speed of 255 km/h. Should make for some fast trips to hockey practice or the grocery store, then.

This being an SUV meant to function in multiple clients, there will be a cold weather package (the “Subzero Weather Package”) and a tow package. That’s right: with the Model X, we have an EV that can tow.

For the moment, Tesla has not confirmed exactly when the Model X will be revealed en complet, but with this latest news, it can’t be far off.
