In what may turn out to be one of the very few true surprises of the 2017 edition of the Ney York Auto Show, Genesis has unveiled a car that isn’t really surprise at the same time. Allow me to explain.
The GV80 is a luxury SUV. To stay in the car business these days, an SUV is a must. The coming of a Genesis SUV was very predictable. As far as fuel cell technology, Hyundai’s dabbled in and with it for a number of years now. Combining the two into a plug-in hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle creates a perfect showcase for the brand.
Styling-wise, we find a mixed bag of elegant lines, principally the smooth curving accent line just below the beltline and odd-looking 23’ mesh alloy wheels and “B” and “C” pillars.
The cabin is far more sophisticated and unified. The horizontal 22-inch curved OLED infinity display is brilliant, showcasing an information zone for the driver, and one for the passenger. The materials and craftsmanship throughout are worthy of the ultra-high-end luxury vehicle market.
The takeaway here is that Genesis will be introducing a midsize luxury ute in the next few years however we are more likely to see a gasoline hybrid version than a fuel cell iteration.
