So, it appears the words \u201cPorsche 911 Turbo\u201d aren\u2019t quite going to have the same ring to them going forward. There will still be a Porsche 911 Turbo model when a refreshed 911 goes on sale for the 2016 model year, but the thing is, the moniker could, technically, be applied to a whole string of Porsche models, from the base 911 Carrera on up.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"The_new_911_Carrera_models\"<\/a><\/p>\n

That\u2019s because for 2016, every 911 model will have a turbocharged engine. Actually, scratch that: make it twin<\/em> turbocharged engines. Not only that, they feature variable turbine turbo technology, similar to what debuted on the 997 generation of the 911 turbo in 2005. It\u2019s helped deliver a 20 per cent horsepower boost to the base Carerra, which now makes 370 hp and 331 lb.-ft. of torque. The Carrera S, meanwhile, makes 420 hp and 368 lb.-ft.<\/p>\n

Of course, power is all well and good, but the offshoot of going the turbo\u2019d route is almost always more about efficiency than it is about power; more specifically, it\u2019s about increasing power, but at the same time, decreasing fuel usage. The variable turbine geometry should help in this regard, although no EPA fuel economy figures are currently available.<\/p>\n

If you select the Sport Chrono Package, there will be four drive modes\u2014Normal, Sport, Sport Plus and Individual\u2014which, for the first time, will be selectable via a wheel-mounted dial , similar to what Ferrari\u2019s done for years with the Mannettino, and what Porsche recently did with the 918 Hybrid supercar (the wheel, meanwhile, also borrows its styling from the 918). Cars with the PDK automatic transmission, meanwhile, get an additional setting that provides maximum acceleration from stop.<\/p>\n

On the chassis front, newly-developed Porsche Active Suspension Management is now standard, It lowers the car by 10 millimetres, and gets newly-developed shock absorbers for even better body control. If more precision is required, rear-wheel steering\u2014derived from the Turbo and GT3 variants\u2014is now available on the Carrera S, and a pneumatic suspension system can be added to better clear better clear parking lot speedbumps and so forth.<\/p>\n

Inside, a new infotainment system (finally) will make its debut on the 911. It reportedly features a smartphone-like touch interface, with Google Earth and Google Streetview being integrated into the navigation system for the first time. And yes, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay will also be supported.<\/p>\n

The 2016 Porsche 911 Carrera and Carrera S will launch in March of 2016, after it debuts at the Frankfurt Auto Show next week.<\/p>\n
