Today, Cadillac pulled the curtain away from the vehicle that\u2019s set to replace the high-selling SRX crossover.<\/strong><\/p>\n

It\u2019s called the XT5 (shorthand for \u201cCrossover Touring 5\u201d\u2014it\u2019s the first in an upcoming line of \u201cXT\u201d models), and while Cadillac is calling it all-new, it\u2019s hard not to see the resemblance with the outgoing model.<\/p>\n

The character lines, the stance, the front fascia and headlights\u2014all quite reminiscent of the old car, but with a touch of \u201cnew Caddy\u201d to freshen things up a little. The daytime running lights, for example, combine with the bumper-mounted foglights the way they do on the current CTS, helping to provide a more menacing front-end that also appears to sit lower to the pavement.<\/p>\n

Under the skin is where the biggest improvements are found.<\/p>\n

The XT5 is 126 kilograms lighter than the SRX, and 45 kilos lighter than the Audi Q5, although the American beats the German on the size front by being 177 millimetres longer. The XT5 wheelbase grows by 50 mm; that also makes way for a further 81 mm of rear legroom. The Caddy is also a whopping 295 kilos lighter than the all-new Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class.<\/p>\n

Interior styling elements will be familiar with anybody who knows current Caddys; the flared surfaces, angular designs and Cadillac User Experience (CUE) infotainment make for a smooth, unique ambiance. The cabin can be trimmed in real wood, aluminum or carbon fibre.<\/p>\n

Speaking of CUE: details are sparse at the moment, but the XT5 features an all-new, faster, system, as well as compatibility for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. There will also be a 4G wireless hotspot. The rear tailgate is now of the hands-free variety; gesturing below the rear bumper with your foot should be enough to activate the tailgate door.<\/p>\n

Engine-wise, a single V6 is on offer for North America: an upgraded version of the SRX\u2019s 3.6-litre V6 that now features cylinder deactivation tech that allows the XT5 to run on four cylinders during light loads. Power is an estimated 310 horsepower and 270 lb.-ft. of torque.<\/p>\n

Transmission duties are handled by a new 8-speed automatic that features an electronic shifter\u2014just think of what we\u2019re currently seeing in Mercedes and BMW vehicles. Apparently, it makes for quieter transmission operation.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s paired with an optional twin-clutch AWD system that can transfer 100 per cent of power to either axle, and to either rear wheel, as well. The rear axle can also be \u201cdisconnected\u201d from the drive system for more fuel-efficient progress.<\/p>\n

The 2017 Cadillac XT5 makes its North American debut at the Los Angeles International Auto Show next week.<\/p>\n
