In these times of talk about autonomous cars, electric everything and all things crossovers, seeing the Honda Civic Type-R Prototype is immensely refreshing, and encouraging for enthusiast.<\/p>\n

\"Honda<\/a><\/p>\n

To actually have this car in Canada is something of a triumph. Unleashed in 1997, Canadian Honda had expressed the desire to see it make its way to our market some 20 years ago. We were blessed with the Acura Integra Type R but it\u2019s been out of circulation for just over 15 years. Enter 2017 and we\u2019re blessed all over again!<\/p>\n

As an undeniable member of the hot compact and\/or hatchback club, which includes the Ford Focus RS, VW Golf R and Subaru WRX STI (and previously the Mitsubishi Lancer EVO), the Type R has quite a challenge on its hands, and a reputation to defend.<\/p>\n

The new Civic Type R is the only member of this exclusive group to NOT feature AWD but we all know how good a finely tuned FWD Honda can be. Very importantly, and as a first time for the R, it will be turbocharged.<\/p>\n

Details are scarce but the mill will likely be a 2.0-liter capable of more than 300-horsepower. The number could be as high as 340-horsepower according to some sources. The big revelation will be torque, an otherwise unknown item for high-performance 4-cylinder Hondas. That number will hover right around the 300 mark as well. The only transmission offered will be a 6-speed manual (thank you Honda!) and the suspension will be electronically adjustable.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re hoping for a 2-door coupe or 3-door hatch, sorry. The next Type R will a 5-door unit and look very much like the prototype on display at the MIAS. The Prototype\u2019s red-upholstered highly bolstered seats should make the final cut as will the massive amount of aero. It would seem as though matte finishes will be on the menu as well.<\/p>\n

For the moment, we known not of the pricing but we were told to expect the car by the summer.<\/p>\n
