The 2016 McLaren 570S: affordable exotica

McLaren continues to expand its line-up of exotic coupes with the addition of the 570S, recently revealed at the New York International Auto Show; it will be the entry-level car in the line-up, set to do battle with the likes of the Porsche 911 Turbo and Lamborghini Huracán.

Yes, it will cost less than its big sisters the 650S and P1, but I wouldn’t put it in the “bargain” section just yet, considering it will likely be worth around CDN $200,000.

On the exterior design front, you can see the family ties with both the P1 supercar and 650S, even if it is smaller an “cheaper”. The rear deck is absolutely reminiscent of the crazy treatment given to the P1, and the contrasting colour swathe across the doors has “baby P1” written all over it.

Inside, the U-shaped dashboard is almost completely taken up by a TFT screen, but it’s less extreme in here than in other McLarens; clearly, the manufacturer wants to ensure that the 570S is accessible to all drivers. At 570 litres, it even has the largest trunk of the line-up, and is touted by McLaren as the most “practical” car they offer.

Under the hood, you’ll find the same 3.8litre turbocharged V8 found in the 650S, detuned here to “just” 562 horsepower and 443 lb.-ft. of torque,  instead of the 650S’ 641 hp and 500 lb.-ft. Power is channeled to the rear wheels through a 7-speed SSG dual-clutch automatic gearbox.

As is McLaren’s wont, the 570S gets an all-new MonoCell II carbon fibre chassis that weighs only 80 kilograms in total. The whole car only weighs 1,313 kg.

No performance figures have been released, but we’re hoping to see a 3.2 second 0-100 km/h time and an electronically-limited 330 km/h top speed.
