Infiniti unveiled the QX30 urban utility vehicle in Geneva yesterday. It combines all-wheel-drive and a mutli-segment silhouette, all wrapped in a body with distinctive, almost coupe-like styling.
It really is the manufacturer’s first attempt at cracking the compact segment–in any capacity, crossover, sedan or otherwise–ever since the G20 bowed out in 1996.
Like so many manufacturers—notably Buick and Mercedes–Infiniti is hoping to reach out to new, younger buyers that like a sense of adventure to go with the daily duties of their luxury car. It does that by maintaining that flowing styling that Infiniti has been known for thanks to vehicles like the Q60 and QX70, but also giving the driver a nice, tall driving position to match.
“With the QX30 Concept, we’re showcasing a distinctively contemporary alternative in the premium compact segment for those who want something more than the status quo,” said Roland Krueger, Infiniti President and CEO.
To compliment the raised driving position, other crossover-specific styling touches have been added: 21-inch wheels, large rear bumpers and distinctive roof pillars.
“We’ve used expected materials in an unexpected way and given functional elements an artistic twist,” said Alfonso Albaisa, Executive Design Director at Infiniti. “It is the unconventional execution of a conventional element that makes the QX30 Concept a design leader.”
Watch for the QX30 to arrive in late 2015 as a 2016 model.
