As Canadians, we all know that driving in winter can be challenge. In spring, summer, and fall, however, we tend to relax behind the wheel, comforted by the fact that the roads are clear of any ice or snow. That can be a mistake, especially in fall when leaves and changing winter conditions can create tricky driving conditions.
Here are a few things to watch out for when driving in fall.
Beware of the leaves
The wet leaves on the road can make the surface as slippery as an icy road. Worse than that, it’s very difficult for a tire, any tire, to grip a leaf. That means that even if your tires are in perfect condition, you can lose control of your vehicle on a road covered with leaves. Therefore, if you see them on the road, it’s best to slow down.
Make sure you have sunglasses
The autumn sun is beautiful, and tends to be very bright. On the other hand, it also tends to set earlier, usually during your commute back home. That means that you can be stuck in traffic with the sun directly in your eyes. Therefore, it’s a good idea to always have sunglasses with you.
Watch for changing weather
Fall weather brings with it fluctuating temperatures. That means that when you leave the house in the morning, the temperature outside may dip below zero, and the road that looks wet may actually be icy. Therefore, adapt your driving style to account for roads that may not appear to be dangerous, but are in actuality.
