Car lovers across the world (and Ferrari lovers, in particular) are no doubt rejoicing today as U.K. newspaper The Guardian reported that Rover De Niro (Taxi Driver, Heat, many others) will star as Enzo Ferrari in a biopoic about the man that started one of the world’s most recognizable brands. The Guardian also reports that the film will take place starting from 1945 to the 1980s.
That would mean that the story will cover the formative years of The Prancing Horse marque, from its debut all the way up until its wide-bodied, Miami Vice era.
That also means that some of the brand’s biggest tales will be told; the attempt at a takeover by Henry Ford, the 1-on-1 battle with a young Ferruccio Lamborghini, the rise to becoming a Formula 1 powerhouse and dealings with mega-car-brand Fiat.
No director has yet been tapped, but Clint Eastwood has allegedly shown interest in the film, one that’s reported to be of the epic variety and shot mainly in Ferrari’s home country, Italy.
While the casting of De Niro is perfect, what will be really interesting to see is the supporting cast, surely to be made up of car-loving buffs from across Hollywood.
