More Audi Allroad models on the way?

The world of the utilitarian car seems to be taking flight. It appears that consumers are finally realizing that they don’t need a big, fat SUV to accommodate their active, go-anywhere lifestyles. Audi is already deeply ensconced in the segment with their A4 and A6 Allroad models, but it appears there’s more to come.

Automobile Magazine reports that it’s very possible that as many as three new Allroad models are on the horizon. Since there are no more wagons available to transform, we turn towards the Sportback models, known as “hatchbacks” to pretty much everybody else. According to Automobile, the A3 Sportback, A5 Sportback and A7 Sportback are in Audi designers’ sights.

It’s certain that the styling will be avant-garde and at least original. One thing is clear: the demand for this vehicle type is getting louder and louder, and people want more to choose from. Following in the footsteps of the current Allroad models, the new cars would have elevated suspension, prominent wheel arches and plastic cladding to better withstand the bumps and bruises associated with more robust terrain.

Eventually—and this is just speculation—we wouldn’t be surprised to see more conventional sedans undergoing the Allroad transformation; Volvo has already beated Audi to the punch, with the arrival of the S60 Cross Country in 2016, following in the footsteps of its V60 wagon cousin. It wouldn’t take much for the A6 and A4 sedans to undergo a similar transformation.
