It appears that one of the first Ford vehicles to get the all-new (and much awaited) SYNC 3 infotainment system is going to be an F-150; it stands to reason, for Ford’s half-ton has been one of the world’s bestselling vehicles for years. Why not use it to display the tech?
SYNC 3 with AppLink (which allows for smartphone-style navigation) appears alongside a host of other class-exclusive features including a 360-degree camera system, adaptive cruise control, active park assist and massaging front seats as part of the all new Limited package for the 2016 F-150.
Before you start thinking “but this is a pickup truck! It doesn’t need all that!”, remember that more and more often these days, pickups are being used as a second or even first vehicle, meaning they have to be able to do more than just haul pavers.
Raised “Limited” script on the hood, special grille and tailgate finish, 22-inch wheels, unique instrument cluster and Mojave leather seating surfaces are all on-hand to help distinguish the Limited from other F-150s.
Inside, in addition to SYNC 3 which adds a better touch interface (we recently sampled it at Ford HQ in Dearborn, MI; it really is much, much better), a 10-speaker Sony sound system means your tunes will sound as loud as the Limited looks.
Also available—and slanting more towards the Limited’s work duty—is Pro Trailer Backup Assist. With it, drivers can turn a knob to indicate direction, with the truck doing the rest by modulating steering and vehicle speed.
Power comes in the form of the 3.5-litre EcoBoost twin-turbo V6 engine, good for 365 horsepower and 420 lb.-ft. of torque, enough to pull up to 4,581 kilograms in weight. Power can be transferred either to the rear wheels, or, if optioned as such, all four wheels through a six-speed automatic transmission, with 4WD adding a two-speed transfer case. There’s no information, yet, on whether you’ll be able to have a F-150 Limited with either the all new 2.7L EcoBoost V6, or the 5.0L V8.
The 2016 Ford F-150 Limited goes on sale in winter of ‘15; expect pricing details closer to that time.
