Hyundai reveals HCD16 Vision G Concept before Pebble Beach debut

Just a few days before its official reveal at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, Hyundai revealed its newest creation: the—wait for it—HCDC16 Vision G.

Vision G Coupe Concept

The big coupe is an “interpretation of the idea that Hyundai breathes into all its vehicles—a DNA that balances design ad performance with the idea that you don’t need to be over the top in terms of glitz and stereotypical luxury cues,” according to Hyundai president and chief design officer, Peter Schreyer.

For the designer and the design teams that have travelled the world for inspiration, discretion is key when it comes to the design of the Vision G. Using chivalry as its basic principle, Hyundai wants to prove that you don’t need to be flashy to be respected. Of course, many would argue that flashiness is often a way of covering up shortcomings in vehicle design and actually losing respect as a result, but we digress.

So, the lines get a little more subtle and a little more discreet (that long, long hood and Rolls-Royce Wraith-like profile notwithstanding), offering a window into what Hyundai’s luxury offerings could look like in the near future. The HCD16, however, isn’t slated for production in its current form.

The goal was to create a car more geared towards the driver as opposed to onlookers, and providing a feeling of movement, even as the car is sitting still. Other details, like doors that open automatically as if a valet was on-hand, 24/7, mean that with the HCD16, luxury is more than just skin-deep.

Hyundai hasn’t pulled the wraps off the interior yet, but according to the manufacturer, the theme will be similar. We’re guessing a dash and centre console slanted towards the driver, BMW-style, and high-quality leathers and materials, which are already on duty in the Genesis sedan.

Speaking of the sedan: the HCD16 is powered by the same 5.0-litre Tau V8 found in that car, where it makes 420 horsepower, and 383 lb.-ft. of torque. While the HCD16’s power figures don’t matter so much as it’s not heading for production, it’s always fun to guess. Don’t’ be surprised if the hp figure reaches the 450 mark, with torque up to 400 lb.-ft.
