2016 Detroit Auto Show: Buick Avista Concept has a Good ol’ Boy thing going on

In the days leading up to the 2016 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, some info leaked that Buick had something big to show. Now that the press conferences are all underway, it seems that it was much more than just vapourware. Enter the 2016 Buick Avista Concept.

And there’s little question that what you’re looking at is a Buick. There are many stylistic tendencies shared with the LaCrosse concept that debuted at the New York Auto Show last year.

So, take that car, ditch a couple of doors, chop the top and voilà! A spectacular sports coupe, with nice, athletic lines that few current Buicks can lay claim to. It seems that it’s time for a bit of a shake-up at one of The General’s more conservative divisions. It’s also important to note that the three-colour shield logo is back on a Buick grille for the first time in quite awhile.

Mechanically, a new twin-turbo V6 cranks out a claimed 400 horsepower. It’s an engine that will be shared with some Cadillac models going forward, but its presence underneath the Avista’s long hood speaks volumes about where Buick’s headed. A spiritual successor to 1982’s Regal Grand National, perhaps?

We can only dream.
