Most world car markets are bursting at the seams with demands for more crossovers. In North America, the car/utility vehicle share is near 50/50 while in countries like China, they expect that SUVs and CUVs will make up 70% of all sales before long. Hey, if you’re a carmaker and want to make money, the secret is out, make more utes!
Volvo’s heard the call loud and clear the new very compact XC40 is the third all-new crossover from the Swedish luxury brand in as many years. While the XC90 set the stage for Volvo’s new design language and technologies, the midsize XC60 will do volume and the XC40 will work hard to shrug off competition from the Audi Q3, Jaguar E-Pace and Mercedes GLA-Class, to name a few.
The 2019 Volvo XC40 will have the distinct advantage of sporting one of the nicer interiors not only in design but in craftsmanship, and materials. The interior quality level is high in this vehicle despite its starting price of $39,500.
For this sum, buyers will get a large array of safety features, as one would expect, a handsome and fun exterior shell and kicker of a powertrain. Starting next spring, the XC40 T5 will hit the road with its turbocharged 248 horsepower and 258 lb.-ft. of torque 2.0-litre 4-cylinder engine. To it will be mated an 8-speed automatic transmission and AWD.
If you’re curious about the XC40, check back right here in less than two weeks as we’re headed off to Spain for a test drive.
