We saw the concept drawings a couple of months ago; now it’s the production model’s turn in the spotlight, when it makes its official debut at the Tokyo Auto Salon at the end of the month. It’s the new 2016 BMW M4 GTS.
The goal of the GTS is simple: BMW engineers wanted to illustrate the full potential of the 4 Series Coupé. With that in mind, they took the M4 and spared no expense in making it a proper performer on-track, but still suited for road use.
The GTS Concept—revealed at the Pebble Beach Concours last year—is used as a basis for the GTS. Indeed, it looks spectacular, with a lot of performance promise. Like the concept, the wheels and front splitter are finished in gold. The sky-high rear wing will also make production, as will the special GTS-specific headlight treatment, which feature OLEDs, a first for production cars.
Inside, the lightness theme continues; the door pulls are replaced either with carbon fibre items or single nylon straps, Porsche Cayman GT4 style. The base seats getting traditional three-point harnesses, while optional ClubSport items get five-point items plus a roll cage, finished in gold to match other interior elements.
Mechanically, we’re expecting a power output of no less than 500 horsepower, and over 440 lb.-ft. of torque form the same 3.0-litre TwinPower turbo engine found in the standard M4. For the GTS, however, it does get water injection. There will be no manual transmission available (for shame, BMW. For shame), but the GTS does get a specially-configured version of the 7-speed dual-clutch item from the M4. The combination allows for a claimed 0-100 km/h sprint of a claimed 3.8 seconds, on to a top speed of 305 km/h.
For the time being, there’s been no confirmation that the M4 GTS will be made available in Canada; if it does, though, you can be sure the quantity will be miniscule as just 700 copies of the 2016 BMW M4 GTS are going to roll off the line.
